Miami-based electro-funk duo Afrobeta, known for their crafty songs, dance tracks and on-stage live energy, debut today the music video for their new song, “Chancletazo,” a Spanish-language track, and lead single off their upcoming new album, Illusion Motel.
Directed by Miami native Biagio Musacchia, the video plays out like a quirky short film. In it, a young teenage boy is plagued by the chancletazo, which for the uninitiated–is a verb meaning “to smack with a chancleta, i.e., a flip flop sandal”.
Despite not speaking Spanish, director Biagio says of the song, “It lends itself to the magic of the chancleta I always heard about growing up. Stories of chancletas swerving around corners and navigating hallways to precision strikes.”
Magical realism weaves itself throughout the video as the boy is visited at nightfall by the Rat King, who promises to lead him to a curandera, or witch, who can put a spell on his mother’s chancletas, rendering their striking force useless. Along the way, he meets a synth wizard who provides a map to the witch’s lair. The boy follows the map tracing his way through local Miami haunts until he finally reaches a tent in the woods for a fateful meeting with the witch.
Afrobeta has been tearing up dance floors in their hometown since 2006. Formed by lyricist/vocalist Cuci Amador and synth-centric producer/arranger Smurphio, their mutual love of catchy songwriting, Cuban pastries, and dancing til’ 5 AM, is what initially inspired them to make music together. They’ve toured internationally, performing at some of the largest music festivals and venues in the world including Glastonbury, Space Ibiza, Burning Man, Ultra Music Festival editions in Miami, South Korea and Brazil, Camp Bisco, and Identity Festival.
Their fourth full-length album, the self-produced Illusion Motel, is set to be released in October 29 on their imprint, Pubic Zirconia.

El dúo de electro-funk Afrobeta, con sede en Miami, conocido por sus canciones ingeniosas, pistas de baile y energía en vivo en el escenario, debuta hoy el tema y video musical de su nueva canción, “Chancletazo” una pista en español y el sencillo de su próximo nuevo álbum, Illusion Motel.
Dirigido por Biagio Musacchia, nativo de Miami, el video se desarrolla como un cortometraje peculiar. En él, un joven adolescente es acosado por el chancletazo, que para los no conocedores del tema, es un verbo que significa “golpear con una chancleta, es decir, una sandalia o chancleta”.
A pesar de no hablar español, el director Biagio dice de la canción: “Se presta a la magia de la chancleta de la que siempre escuché hablar cuando era niño. Historias de chancletas dando vueltas en las esquinas y navegando por los pasillos hacia golpes de precisión “.
El realismo mágico se entreteje a lo largo del video cuando el Rey Rata visita al joven al anochecer, quien promete llevarlo a una curandera, o bruja, que puede hechizar las chancletas de su madre, haciendo que su fuerza de ataque sea inútil. En el camino, conoce a un mago sintetizador que le proporciona un mapa de la guarida de la bruja. El joven sigue el mapa trazando su camino a través de los lugares locales de Miami hasta que finalmente llega a una tienda en el bosque para un fatídico encuentro con la bruja.
Afrobeta ha estado rompiendo pistas de baile en su ciudad natal desde 2006. Formada por la cantautora Cuci Amador y el productor y arreglista centrado en los sintetizadores Smurphio, su amor mutuo por la composición pegajosa, los pasteles cubanos y el baile hasta las 5 de la mañana es lo que inicialmente los inspiró hacer música juntos. Han realizado giras internacionales, actuando en algunos de los festivales y lugares de música más grandes del mundo, incluyendo Glastonbury, Space Ibiza, Burning Man, ediciones de Ultra Music Festival en Miami, Corea del Sur y Brasil, Camp Bisco e Identity Festival.
Su cuarto álbum de larga duración, Illusion Motel, producido por Afrobeta, se lanzará el 29 de octubre en su sello Pubic Zirconia.
