Machete Music, Universal Music Latin Entertainment’s record label signed the first cumbia alternative band of the island to its catalog approximately 1 year. Originally from Santurce PR, Los Chinchillos del Caribe has created their own version of cumbia. The group consists of “King Chinchillo” (Ray C. Rodríguez – Voz), “Sr. Bizarro” (Luis M. Velandia – Voz), “Sr. Klavera” (Rubeìn Avileìs – Hipe Man), “Sr. Jacinto” (Damian Feliciano – Coros/Hipe/Guiro) and “La Leyenda” (Alex Veìlez – Guitarra). The group was created as a result of the strike of the University of Puerto Rico in 2009. The band members joined the student protest due to increase in the enrollment of the country’s 1st educational institution.
“What began as an act of protest became the first musical proposal of cumbia in PR.” Our project shows us what we really are: we have cumbia, mixed with reggaetón, rock, merengue ripiao, salsa and moombathon. Not many people understood at first but it is gaining acceptance in the street of PR and little by little we caught the attention of several producers and brands in PR.The project began to grow and we had to look for someone to trust the project and that’s where we signed with Jafet Santiago and Sparkof Entertainment “said Ray C. Rodriguez AKA” King Chinchillos”.
“The group is one of the most innovative groups that has come out of PR since Calle 13 in 2005. Our job was to bring a group of producers that understood the vision of the band and bring it to the sound level that we wanted. The producers of the album are: ASID The Producer, The Julca Brothers (Ricky Martin, Pauline, David Bisbal) DJ Blass (Daddy Yankee, Nicky Jam, Wisin y Yandel) Echo (Fat Joe, Pitbull, Daddy Yankee, La Mala Ray C. Rodriguez and finally joined Toy Selectah (Control Machete, Diplo, Manu Chao, Cypress Hill, Cafe Tacvba, Calle 13, Vico C, Orishas), Happy Colors (Diplo), Felian, Juanes) to give the final touches to the alternative Cumbia proposal that we want to present to the world. The mastering was in charge of Frank El Medico (Diplo, Major Lazer, Calle 13, Daddy Yankee). At the end this album is a reflection of all those masterminds ” Jafet Santiago, Group Manager And Executive Producer of the Sparkof / Machete Music / Universal Music Latin Entertainment strategic alliance.
The album released today, May 25th and is titled “El Pugilato”, in clear reference to the current situation in the country and how complicated it was to be able to unite all the producers of the album. The first single “Pelao” was released digitally to the market on December 9 on all platforms and at the same time that the video was released on Vevo. The video was directed by Robin Rosario and used different locations in Puerto Rico. The single will begin to be heard on the radio in the summer of 2017.

Machete Music, sello discográfico de Universal Music Latin Entertainment firmó aproximadamente 1 año la primera banda de cumbia alternativa de la isla. Oriundos de Santurce PR, Los Chinchillos del Caribe han creado su propia versión de la cumbia. El grupo compuesto por “King Chinchillo” (Ray C. Rodríguez – Voz), “Sr. Bizarro” (Luis M. Velandia – Voz), “Sr. Klavera” (Rubeìn Avileìs – Hipe Man), “Sr. Jacinto” (Damian Feliciano – Coros/Hipe/Guiro) y “La Leyenda” (Alex Veìlez – Guitarra) se formó en la huelga de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en el 2009. Los hoy miembros de la banda, se unieron a la protesta estudiantil debido al alza en la matrícula de la 1era institución educativa del país.
“Lo que comenzoì como un acto de protesta se convirtioì en la primera propuesta musical de cumbia en PR. Nuestra proyecto muestra lo que somos realmente. Tenemos cumbia, mezclada con reggaetoìn, rock, merengue ripiao, salsa y moombathon. Es un concepto que no mucha gente entendiìa al principio pero fue ganando aceptacioìn en la calle de PR y poco a poco llamo la atencioìn de varios productores y marcas en PR. El proyecto comenzóì a crecer y tuvimos que buscar a alguien en quien confiar el proyecto y ahiì es que firmamos con Jafet Santiago y Sparkof Entertainment” afirmo Ray C. “El grupo es con toda probabilidad una de las propuestas maìs innovadoras que ha salido de PR desde Calle 13 en el 2005. Nuestro trabajo fue traer a un grupo de productores que entendieran la visioìn de la banda y la llevaran al nivel sonoro que queriìamos. Los productores del disco son: ASID The Producer, The Julca Brothers (Ricky Martin, Jencarlos Canela, Paulina, David Bisbal) DJ Blass (Daddy Yankee, Nicky Jam, Wisin y Yandel) Echo (Fat Joe, Pitbull, Daddy Yankee, La Mala, Vico C, Orishas) Happy Colors (Diplo), Felian, Shadow La Sombra (Arcaìngel), Ray C. Rodríguez y al final se unioì Toy Selectah (Control Machete, Diplo, Manu Chao, Cypress Hill, Cafe Tacvba, Calle 13, Juanes) para darle los uìltimos toques a la propuesta de Cumbia Alternativa que queremos presentarle al mundo. El mastering estuvo a cargo de Frank El Medico (Diplo, Major Lazer, Calle 13, Daddy Yankee). El disco sale hoy, 25 de mayo y lleva por título “El Pugilato”, en clara referencia a la situación actual que vive su país y lo complicado que se les hizo poder unir a todos los productores del disco. El primer sencillo “Pelao” fue lanzado de manera digital al mercado el 9 de diciembre en todas las plataformas y a la misma vez que se estrenó el video en Vevo. El video fue dirigido por Robin Rosario y se utilizaron diferentes localidades de Puerto Rico. El sencillo comenzará a escucharse en la radio en verano del 2017.
