The Rock ‘n’ Roll Mérida Half Marathon will feature El Gran Silencio and La Gusana Ciega as the double headliner for this weekend’s upcoming race scheduled for November 3. El Gran Silencio and La Gusana Ciega, both widely popular in the Mexico music scene, will be sure to get runners to their feet to celebrate a great day of running. Just in time to celebrate Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) and the end of race weekend, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Mérida Half Marathon will be an event runners, spectators and local music lovers won’t want to miss.

Fresh off their 25th anniversary celebration, El Gran Silencio formed in Monterrey in 1993 and will be the first headliner in a jam-packed day of music in Mérida. Since their beginnings, the stylings of El Gran Silencio are synonymous with celebration perfect for a finish line festival. With a sound described as popular northern freestyle, their musical influences fuse genres from hip-hop, reggae, cumbia, polka to vallenato. Their most recognized single, “Chúntaro Style,” demonstrates this eclectic mix. The song exploded in Mexico and catapulted them to success thanks to MTV, landing them a collaboration with the well-known Mexican singer, Juan Gabriel. They have performed in festivals such as Vive Latino and the Cervantino International Festival.

La Gusana Ciega will continue the party with a setlist that will ignite the hearts of fans. Established in Mexico City’s underground rock scene, the band formed in the early 1990s, releasing their first studio album, Merlina, in 1996, followed by Superbee, a year later. As one of the most popular indie rock groups, La Gusana Ciega opened for Oasis in 1998. After a few years working on solo projects beginning in 2002, the band reunited in 2005 and delivered six new studio albums from 2006-2017, earning a nomination for Best Rock Album in 2015’s Latin Grammy awards.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Merida Half Marathon will have a 10K race in addition to the half marathon. This race is like no other as both courses will be interspersed with live music and entertainment on the route. The race starts at the Monument of La Patria, on the Paseo de Montejo, the main avenue in Merida, full of trees and with houses and buildings inspired by the French and Italian. The course shows off the best of Merida sites and a diverse mix of modern and traditional architecture before taking runners to the finish line at the General Salvador Alvarado Stadium.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Mérida Half Marathon is owned and operated by Asdeporte, an independent licensee of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. Information on general registration into the 2018 Rock ‘n’ Roll Mérida Half Marathon and 10K can be accessed at www.runrocknroll.com/es/events/Mérida.
