Panamanian composer Erika Ender achieved another milestone in her impeccable 25-year career, thanks to the remix version of “Despacito”, a song she co-wrote alongside Luis Fonsi, which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.
Ender is the woman behind the genius worldwide success that the track has reached. And now it goes down in Latin music history marking the first time since 1996 that a song in Spanish reaches #1 on the mainstream U.S. music chart. Previously it had been achieved by “Macarena”.
“What has happened with this song is truly a blessing, not only for all those involved, but also for Latin music throughout the world. The whole world is singing and dancing in Spanish. When Fonsi and I sat down to write it in his home accompanying it just with the guitar, we never imagined that it was going to have such a gigantic reach,” said Ender, upon learning of the #1.
Just a month after its release, “Despacito” Remix by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber becomes the first song in Spanish to reach the #1 spot on the Hot 100 in more than 20 years.
Without a doubt, it is yet another achievement by Ender who was recently chosen to enter the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 2017. Ender stood out as the only woman in her category and the youngest-ever to be chosen to the Hall of Fame. The composers will be officially inducted into the Hall during the fifth annual ceremony of the LA MUSA AWARDS to be held on October 19, 2017.
“Despacito” is added to the list of hit songs Ender has accumulated throughout her career which include 40 top singles in multiple markets, and more than 160 albums released with her songs in different genres ranging from pop to regional Mexican. Ender has also garnered the most important awards in the industry including the Latin GRAMMY, Latin Billboard, Monitor Latino, SESAC, ASCAP, as well as other awards and nominations.
Since the release of the remix version of “Despacito”, featuring Justin Bieber (on April 17th), the collab became an instant mainstream hit and thanks to this, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee earned their first-ever #1 on the Hot 100 chart. It also makes Bieber the first artist ever to earn new #1s in back-to-back weeks.
“Despacito” has proven to be unstoppable. . . it is also the #1 song on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart for 16 weeks and counting – the longest run ever at #1 in the 30 year history of the chart. In addition, it is #1 on Nielsen’s Digital Song Sales chart and also #1 on the US Streaming Songs chart with 54.3 million streams.
Erika Ender has taken Panama to the top of the charts throughout the world, standing out as a woman who has made history, not only for her country, but worldwide. She is the first and only Panamanian woman to win a LATIN GRAMMY as a composer, as well as one of the few Hispanic women to do so.
She has written songs in Spanish, English and Portuguese for countless international artists such as Luis Fonsi, Gloria Trevi, Justin Bieber, Los Tigres del Norte, Son by Four, Ednita Nazario, Chayanne, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Leonardo (Brazil), among others.
In addition, through her Puertas Abiertas Foundation, she has been working since 2009 for children and youth in her country, through music, improving the lives of children and youth eradicated from child labor or at social risk. She has also launched TALENPRO (Talent with Purpose), a National Intercollegiate Festival that exposes and cultivates the artistic talents of school-age children, while at the same time instilling values, culture and social responsibility in the students.

La compositora panameña Erika Ender se anota otro éxito en su impecable trayectoria artística de 25 años gracias a la versión remix del tema “Despacito”, canción que coescribió al lado de Luis Fonsi, la cual esta semana alcanzó el #1 del “Billboard Hot 100”.
Ender es la mujer detrás de la genialidad y el éxito a nivel mundial que este tema ha alcanzado. Y ahora pasa a la historia de la música latina tras convertirse en la primera vez desde 1996 que una canción en español logra el primer lugar del famoso listado musical. Anteriormente lo había hecho la “Macarena”.
“Es una verdadera bendición lo que ha pasado con este tema, no sólo para todos los involucrados, sino para la música latina en el mundo. El mundo entero está cantando y bailando en español. Cuando Fonsi y yo nos sentamos a crearla, en su casa y vistiéndola sólo a guitarra, jamás nos imaginamos que iba a tener un alcance tan inmenso,” expresó Ender, conmovida con la noticia del #1 del Hot 100.
A sólo un mes desde su lanzamiento, “Despacito’ Remix, colaboración de Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee y Justin Bieber se coloca como la primera canción en español en llegar al primer lugar del Hot 100 en más de 20 años.
Sin duda es un logro más para Erika Ender quien recientemente fue seleccionada para formar parte del Salón de la Fama de los Compositores Latinos 2017, convirtiéndose en la compositora más joven y una de las pocas mujeres dentro del prestigioso grupo. En octubre de este año ingresará oficialmente en la ceremonia anual La Musa.
“Despacito” se suma a la lista de éxitos que la panameña ha acumulado a lo largo de su carrera entre los que destacan 40 top singles, más de 160 discos editados con sus temas en distintos idiomas y géneros musicales, así como los premios más importantes de la industria como Latin Grammy, Latin Billboard, Monitor Latino, SESAC, ASCAP, entre otros.
Desde que se anunció el lanzamiento de la versión remix de “Despacito”, al lado de Justin Bieber el pasado 17 de abril, esta colaboración se perfilaba por ser una de las favoritas del público y gracias a esto, Luis Fonsi y Daddy Yankee alcanzan por primera vez el #1 dentro de este listado.
También representa otro logro para Justin Bieber, pues con ¨Despacito¨ se anota otro éxito que lo coloca como el primer artista en alcanzar el primer lugar del listado consecutivamente durante semanas, anteriormente sólo The Beatles había logrado este récord.
El éxito de ¨Despacito¨ es imparable, se ha convertido en la canción latina líder del momento, pues además de ser #1 en el Hot 100 desde 1996, también es líder en el chart Hot Latin Songs, donde lleva 16 semanas en la cima, lo cual la coloca como el más largo #1 en 30 años de la historia del chart.
Además, es #1 en la lista de Digital Song Sales de Nielsen, también tiene el primer lugar en el chart de Streaming Songs de Estados Unidos con 54.3 millones de streams, y ha alcanzado más de 104, 000 descargas vendidas.
Erika Ender ha llevado a Panamá a los primeros lugares alrededor del mundo destacándose como una mujer que ha hecho historia, no sólo para su país sino a nivel mundial. Es la primera y única mujer panameña en ganar un LATIN GRAMMY como compositora, al igual que una de las pocas y contadas hispanas en lograrlo.
