On the heels of her critically acclaimed, Geoff Barrow-produced debut album, Anika returns with this seductive self-titled EP out on Stones Throw worldwide April 16.
Anika’s version of The Kinks’ lovelorn classic “I Go To Sleep” leads the EP, which also features brand new covers of songs by The Crystals (“He Hit Me”), Chromatics (In The City) and Shocking Blue (“Love Buzz”) as well as illuminating dub versions of previous singles “Yang Yang” and “No One’s There” by Bristol producer Ratman.
In a Spin Magazine article out this week lead singer Karen O of the Yeah Yeahs Yeahs (and the eloquent Sitek) named Anika and Kanye West as their inspiration for new release Mosquito (2013): “Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Anika, the eponymous album from the punk-noir singer and Geoff Barrow of Portishead. “Those two spawned this record,” Karen O says.
Stones Throw will release the Anika EP worldwide, continuing the fruitful relationship that began with the US license of Anika’s first record. The cult US indie label is best known for releases by the likes of J Dilla and Mayer Hawthorne as well as electronic pioneers from Bruce Haack to James Pants, and recently collaborated with New York’s Minimal Wave label on two influential compilations.
Anika is currently gearing up for her performance at the May festival All Tomorrow’s Partiesin London curated by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Grizzly Bear, and she just got nominated by a prestigious German film festival for a Mu-Vi Award. It’s a fan-fueled competition so please take a moment to vote for Anika’s video “Fitter Happier” HERE.From Anika’s Forthcoming Self-Titled EP this April 16th
