Colombian stars Bomba Estéreo have released “Internacionales,” the second single from their new album “Ayo”. “‘Internacionales’ is a statement about how music is the biggest and most beautiful language that crosses all barriers,” says Bomba Estéreo founder Simon Mejia. “Independent of race and culture, we’re all the same when it comes to sharing the dance floor.”
The album “Ayo” is set for release digitally next Friday, August 11th and physically in September. “‘Ayo’ was born in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, one of the most powerful places in the world,” Mejia says. “The album title is a tribute to that magical place. A spiritual ceremony opened the path to this album. It returns to the Caribbean sonic roots of Bomba Estéreo while at the same time, keeps looking at the world with open eyes and open ears, taking risks on new paths.”
Recent single “Duele” is accompanied by the official video directed by Sam Mason. “Duele” is about the pain of heartbreak and overcoming it. While the music’s melody line recalls a Middle Eastern influence, it was recorded on a flauta de millo – the traditional woodwind instrument often played on classic cumbia recordings from the Caribbean coast of Colombia. The song was recorded in the Sierra Nevada mountain town of Minca, near Liliana’s hometown of Santa Marta.
Next week, Bomba Estéreo will launch an extensive world tour alongside the release of “Ayo”. The tour features headline theater shows in addition to major festival sets like Outside Lands (SF) and Bestival (UK).
“Ayo” is Bomba Estéreo’s 5th studio album, following the breakthrough success of its last album Amanecer, which was recently certified Latin Gold by the RIAA in the U.S. The album brought the band numerous accolades including a GRAMMY® nomination, the collaboration “Fiesta (Remix Ft. Will Smith)” and the anthem “Soy Yo.”
The “Soy Yo” music video immediately went viral last fall, surpassing more than 22 million views. The clip resulted in first-time actress Sarai Gonzalez being invited to the White House to meet President Obama. Lin Manuel Miranda tweeted about the video, saying he watches it “every morning to give me strength. I love it so.” The New York Times published an Arts Cover Story about the power of the video in empowering Latinas. The video was also featured in outlets from VOGUE to The Guardian. NPR said: “It’s been called an ode to little brown girls everywhere. A swaggier Little Miss Sunshine. An empowerment anthem.”

El reconocido grupo colombiano Bomba Estéreo hoy lanza “Internacionales”, el segundo sencillo de su próximo álbum “Ayo”. “‘Internacionales’ afirma que la música es el lenguaje más grande y hermoso que traspasa todas las barreras”, dice Simón Mejía, fundador del grupo. “Más allá de cuestiones de raza y cultura, somos lo mismo cuando se trata de compartir la pista de baile”.
“Ayo” será editado en formato digital el próximo viernes, 11 de agosto y en formato físico en septiembre. Simón Mejía afirma que “‘Ayo’ nació en la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, uno de los lugares más poderosos del mundo. El título del álbum es un homenaje a ese lugar mágico. Una ceremonia espiritual abrió el camino hacia este álbum, que nos vuelve a conectar con las raíces caribeñas de Bomba Estéreo y a la vez, sigue mirando hacia el mundo con los ojos y oídos abiertos, tomando riesgos hacia nuevos senderos”.
“Duele” se trata del proceso de superar un desamor. La melodía principal de la canción tiene influencia del Medio Oriente pero fue grabada con una flauta de millo, instrumento típico de los grupos de cumbia de la Región Caribe de Colombia. La realización de esta canción se llevó a cabo en el pueblo de Minca en la Sierra Nevada, cerca de Santa Marta, la ciudad natal de Liliana Saumet, vocalista de Bomba Estéreo.
La próxima semana, Bomba Estéreo emprenderá una extensa gira mundial que coincide con el lanzamiento de “Ayo”. Sus próximas fechas incluyen conciertos como artista principal en teatros, al igual que actuaciones especiales en prestigiosos festivales como Outside Lands (San Francisco) y Bestival (Reino Unido).
“Ayo” será el quinto álbum de estudio de Bomba Estéreo, siguiendo los pasos del exitoso disco Amanecer, el cual se hizo acreedor a Disco de Oro por la RIAA gracias a sus altas ventas en Estados Unidos y Puerto Rico. El cortometraje de “Soy Yo” se estrenó el pasado otoño y se convirtió en un éxito viral, acumulando más de 22 millones de reproducciones en YouTube. La popularidad y el mensaje de este video lograron que su actriz revelación, Sarai González, fuera invitada a la Casa Blanca para conocer a Presidente Obama. Lin-Manuel Miranda tuiteó sobre el video diciendo que lo ve “cada mañana para darme fuerzas. Lo amo tanto”. The New York Times publicó un artículo en su sección de Artes sobre la influencia del video para motivar a mujeres de ascendencia latina. También recibió excelentes notas en VOGUE y The Guardian.
