Food and beverage vendors will offer a wide variety to choose from, and a beer garden with over 15 different local breweries is available, as well. An expected 5,000 people will be in attendance. The Alonso family of Miami Lakes created this event after its patriarch, Roberto Alonso, Sr., passed away from a rare form of cancer. Roberto was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and public servant, having served the Town of Miami Lakes as a founding Council Member and its first Vice Mayor. When he was diagnosed with this rare form of cancer in May of 2013, he was given very little hope and only days to live. After receiving such a stark prognosis, most would surrender and prepare for the inevitable, but not Roberto, Sr. Armed with an unwavering faith in the Almighty, the steadfast support and unparalleled love of his family, and the cutting-edge treatment he received at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and its affiliates, he was able to enjoy the love of his family and friends for an additional 16 months. He finally succumbed to his ailment in 2014. Roberto, Sr. had a passion for classic and antique cars, and this passion, along with his battle with cancer, was the genesis of this event, unique to the communities that he so dearly loved. The Alonso family memorializes Roberto, Sr., and honors cancer survivors that live every day as a testimony to their strength and courage against the scourge that is cancer, with this philanthropic endeavor.
These events are operated and produced solely by volunteers. Many of the venues and logistical infrastructure is donated, and 100% of any remaining proceeds are directly donated to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center for research to combat and eventually eradicate cancer – arguably, the plague of modern Humanity. To date, Miami Lakes Cars for a Cure has raised approximately $100,000 for cancer research. This year’s goal is $50,000.
