Track by Track:

“Es Como El Día” (It’s Like the Day): This ethereal song is a duet between Kevin Johansen and his daughter Miranda, with his daughter Kim providing backing vocals. Sebastián Schachtel (Las Pelotas) plays keyboards and Javier Casalla (Bajo Fondo) plays the violin.

“Dios De La Marea” (God of the Tide): Featuring Miss Bolivia, this song has an Afro-Peruvian vibe.

“Tiene Algo”(Interesting Little Thing): Produced by Cachorro López and Sebastián Schon, with both playing bass and keyboards, this song represents the folk essence of the album.

“Oh What A Waist” (Pero Qué Cintura!): An homage to Barranquilla, Colombia, that uses the son rhythm to tell the story of an unsophisticated tourist.

“5 In The Morning”: A country song recorded in New York with Rod Hohl and Robert Bonhomme, collaborators from Kevin’s 1990s stint with CBGB’s house band. Leo Sidran plays piano; production is handled by Cachorro López/Sebastián Schon.

“La Bach-Chata (Habladurías)” (The Mini-Bach / Gossip): Marcos Mundstock of the Argentine group Les Luthiers appears on this track, and wrote his own speech for it. Guest vocals are performed by the Argentine rock pioneer Palito Ortega. It’s a study in human frailty, framed by JS Bach’s Prelude No. 1, and a tribute to Mundstock’s late bandmate Daniel Rabinovich.

“El Jardín Del Desdén” (The Garden of Disdain): A retro-styled bolero with guest vocalist Aldo “Macha” Asenjo, of the beloved Chilean band Chico Trujillo.

“Folky”: A celebration of the tradition of singing around a campfire. Guest artist Pity Álvarez adds his distinctive rock-tinged vocals to this splendid song.

“Torçer A Favor” (Rooting In Favor): A corrective to the anti-Brazil soccer anthem “Brasil, Decime Qué Se Siente,” featuring the Brazilian musician Arnaldo Antunes. It talks about society’s tendency to wish ill on others, in all aspects of life.

“Life Is Killing Me”: An introspective ballad in English and a collaboration with several members of the critically acclaimed Peruvian band Kanaku y El Tigre.

“Meanwhile (Take A Look Inside Me)”: A foxtrot, recorded in New York. It’s about our struggles to embrace our freedom to be loved.

“Amor Telepathic Love”: A danceable dreamscape produced by Cachorro López and Sebastián Schon.

“Zambaguala Del Viajero”: Ricardo Mollo plays E-bow guitar on this track that brings the album full circle and pays tribute to the journeys and the musicians who have put their heart into Mis Américas, Vol. ½.
