It’s a tremendous gem we found in our archives.

The year was 2000 and Juanes had recently released his first solo album (Fijate Bien), after leaving his long standing band Ekhymosis in Medellin, Colombia. Juanes here is attending a Latin rock festival called Watcha! Tour as an espectator. Watcha! Tour, lasted  three years in the US with big headliners sucha as Molotov, Cafe Tacuva, Enanitos Verdes, La Ley and Aterciopelados. The funny thing is that the next year, Juanes was headlining that tour, in several cities and he and his band would be performng on that same stage in the back, the Bayfront Park in Miami.

On September 2001, he garnered six nominations to the Latin Grammys, that definitively brought all that fame and fortune making him become the world idol he is today.

I remember before starting the interview, Juanes said something like ‘this record is my bet”, something like “this is my last shot in music”. As you can see in the video, he is seen preoccupied, tense and even depressed. That feeling embraced by many artists who do not see the fruits of their labor as they want. But, to his fortune, his destiny was awaiting for him.

Juanes was several times on the cover of our paper magazine, which circulated in the US and Latin America from 1996 to 2008. He visited our radio show and shares pleasant moments with us to this date. Juanes is a BOOM artist.

Notice playing on the background of this video the band Fulano Tal.  Led by Cuban-American singer songwriter Elsten Torres, who represented Miami at that festival. Listen to his music, Fulano is also a hero of Latin alternative music. His song “Caramelo” was recorded by Alejandra Guzman.

Era el año 2000 y recién iba a estrenarse el primer disco como solista de Juanes, el “Fíjate Bien“. Juanes asistía como espectador, junto a otros amigos suyos – entre ellos Guillermo “Memo” Arias, Andrés Castaño, Jorge Moreno – a la primera edición del festival de música latina alternativa Watcha! Tour, que estuvo girando por tres años en EEUU con figuras del momento como Molotov, Café Tacuva, Enanitos Verdes, La Ley, Aterciopelados. Lo curioso es que al año siguiente, Juanes sería figura del cartel de ese mismo tour, en varias ciudades y estaría en ese escenario del Bayfront Park de Miami que Uds. ven de fondo ya como un triunfador, pues en septiembre de 2001 lograría la nominación a seis Latin GRAMMYs https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%ADjate_bien lo que definitivamente, y sin lugar a dudas, le traería toda la fama y fortuna del mundo convirtiéndose en el ídolo mundial que es hoy.
Recuerdo que antes de empezar la grabación, Juanes me dijo algo como que este disco era su apuesta total, algo como su último cartucho en la música. Como ven en el video, se le ve ensimismado, tenso y hasta deprimido. Ese sentimiento que albergan muchos artistas que no ven el fruto de su trabajo como quisieran. Pero para su fortuna, el destino sería otro.
Juanes fue portada de nuestra revista -que circuló en papel por EEUU y Latinoamérica de 1996 a 2008-, en varias ocasiones. Visitó nuestro programa de radio y compartimos gratos momentos hasta la fecha. Juanes es, un artista BOOM.
En el fondo está tocando en vivo la agrupación Fulano de Tal, de Elsten Torres, que representaba a Miami en el festival. No dejen de escuchar su música, Fulano también es un héroe de la música latina alternativa. Su tema “Caramelo” fue grabado por Alejandra Guzmán.
